Project Overview
Aureos is supporting the delivery of National Highways' A66 Northern Trans-Pennine Upgrade, a major infrastructure programme designed to transform one of the North of England's most important east-west transport corridors. The scheme will deliver a £1 billion investment to dual the remaining single carriageway sections along the 50-mile stretch between the M6 in Cumbria and the A1(M) at Scotch Corner in North Yorkshire.

The Challenge
The A66 plays a vital role in connecting communities, businesses and international ports, while providing access to employment, education and healthcare services. Despite its importance, sections of the route remain single carriageway, resulting in congestion, journey delays and reliability issues for road users.
The challenge is to modernise the corridor while maintaining access for road users, minimising disruption to local communities and protecting the surrounding environment.
Delivering the Upgrade
Aureos is helping to deliver this nationally significant infrastructure programme, supporting the enhancement of capacity, connectivity and safety along the route. The project will create a more resilient transport network by improving traffic flow and reducing delays across one of the North's most important road links.
By upgrading the route to dual carriageway standards, the scheme will improve journey reliability for commuters, businesses and freight operators while strengthening connections between Cumbria, North Yorkshire and the wider UK road network.

The project is being delivered in line with a comprehensive Environmental Management Plan (EMP), ensuring environmental considerations remain central to decision-making throughout the programme.
