The Challenge
Bristol Temple Meads is both a vital transport hub and a nationally significant heritage asset. Modernising critical systems within a Grade I listed building requires careful integration of new technology without compromising historic features. At the same time, the station has remained open throughout, maintaining service for tens of thousands of passengers every day.
Our Solution
Aureos is leading the planning, design coordination and delivery of a full mechanical and electrical modernisation programme.
Electrical infrastructure is being renewed with new low voltage systems, substations, incoming supplies and standby generation to strengthen resilience. Lighting has been upgraded to energy efficient LED and emergency systems, supported by intelligent controls that respond to real time demand.
Mechanical upgrades include new heating and boiler plant, improved gas infrastructure and enhanced ventilation and cooling systems. Advanced sensors and metering enable more efficient operation and performance monitoring.
All systems are integrated through a centralised Building Management System, providing real time visibility, control and data driven optimisation across the station.
Risk Management and Safety
A disciplined approach to risk underpins delivery. Aureos works closely with Network Rail through regular reviews, supported by task specific assessments, safe working methods and daily briefings. Continuous monitoring ensures safety standards are maintained while protecting service continuity and build quality.
Sustainability and Long Term Value
The modernised systems significantly improve energy efficiency and operational performance. LED lighting, smart controls and upgraded heating, ventilation and cooling reduce energy use and carbon emissions, while enhanced power infrastructure and digital monitoring improve reliability and support future growth.
Together, these upgrades ensure Bristol Temple Meads is more efficient, more resilient and better equipped for the future while respecting its historic fabric. As Ashley Farrell, Construction Manager, explains, “With the rewiring project, all of the lighting of the station has been upgraded from old style halogen, tubular light fittings to new LED fittings. With that, there’s already been a cost saving exercise put in place by Network Rail, and they’ve seen a drastic increase on savings.”
