Project Overview

Aureos delivered the Bumpers Farm 100MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), in Buckinghamshire as the EPC contractor for Aureos Bumpers Farm 100MW BESS. The project provides large-scale energy storage infrastructure connected to the national grid through two 50MW Battery Storage solutions, each with a 132kV substation connection; this will help to increase available energy storage capacity within the UK electricity network.  At the time of delivery, the scheme was one of the joint largest battery energy storage facilities in Europe.

Sector:

Energy

Region:

South East

Service:

EPC delivery of battery energy storage infrastructure

Client:

Harmony Energy (Tesla ultimate client)

The Challenge

The project required Aureos to deliver two 50MW BESS phases and associated 132kV substations within a demanding eight-month programme.

Our Solution

As EPC contractor, Aureos managed all civil and electrical design and build activities, coordinating specialist teams across engineering, construction and commissioning.  To meet the demanding eight-month programme, Aureos implemented detailed programme management and planning sessions to ensure work was completed safely and efficiently.

Overcoming Site Constraints:  The development compromised two sites positioned at different elevation. Water draining from the higher site affected the lower construction area and within connecting cable ducts.  Aureos deployed additional labour and pumping equipment to seal the affected areas and implement mitigation measures to maintain programme progress and enable critical construction activities to continue.

Risk Management and Safety

Aureos has implemented extensive access planning, daily coordination briefings and close stakeholder collaborations to safely manage up to 80 personnel working concurrently within each compound. Regular engagement with contractors, local authorities, landowners and the DNO helped minimise risks and maintain safe operations throughout delivery.

Sustainability and Long-Term Value

The project provides critical energy storage capacity to support the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy system. Aureos delivered more than £200,000 of savings through design optimisation and collaborative engineering. These included removing the requirement for a Natural Earthing Resistor in partnership with Wilsons Transformers, simplifying battery megapack foundations to reduce concrete volumes and programme duration, and replacing individual wiring runs with multicore cabling solutions.
