Project Overview
Aureos delivered key civil engineering works for the Greenlink Interconnector Converter Station in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. This will enable electricity to be converted and transferred between the UK and Ireland via a 200km subsea interconnector. The converter station is the hub that allows electricity to be sent efficiently between Wales and Ireland, helping both countries share power and support renewable energy supplies. The converter station converts electricity between alternating current (AC), enabling efficient power transmission between Wales and Ireland through the Greenlink interconnector.

The Challenge
Delivering a major converter station in a remote coastal location presented challenges around supplier availability. With adverse weather conditions it meant that there was frequent disruption, to fix this we carried out works flexibly to accommodate these delays and proceeded with cladding works when the weather was suitable and safe to do so. The project required working closely with international design teams to manage design reviews and approvals across multiple locations and time zones.
Our Solution
Aureos delivered critical civil engineering works, including the converter station control room, transformer blast walls, cableways, foundations and steel-clad buildings. Innovative prefabrication methods and early supplier engagement helped improve efficiency, maintain quality and support programme delivery despite the challenges of a remote coastal location. The project also included construction of the DC Hall, Converter Hall and storage buildings, together with drainage systems and infrastructure to support the operation of the facility.
Risk Management and Safety
Aureos mitigated project risks through proactive programme management, early supply chain engagement, collaborative planning and regular coordination with design and site teams. Flexible scheduling and continuous weather monitoring helped maintain progress while ensuring safe working practices.
Sustainability and Long-Term Value
The Greenlink Interconnector will strengthen energy security and support the integration of renewable energy across the UK and Ireland. Once operational, the interconnector will enable the transfer of up to 500MW of electricity between the two countries, helping balance supply and demand across both networks. Aureos’s efficient construction methods, local supply chain engagement and innovative engineering solutions have helped to reduce project impacts whilst delivering infrastructure that supports the transition to a low-carbon future.
