The Howden Relief Road is a major highways scheme designed to ease congestion through Howden and improve connectivity across East Yorkshire.
Delivered by Aureos, the project will divert heavy traffic away from the town centre, improving journey times, safety and local air quality. It also acts as a key enabling infrastructure project, unlocking significant residential and commercial development in the area.
As the first phase of the wider HOW-G development, the scheme will support the creation of a new, sustainable community alongside long-term economic growth.

The Challenge
Delivering the Howden Relief Road has required careful management of a complex and constrained environment.
The site sits within a floodplain, presenting ongoing challenges around groundwater management and water control. Construction has also been impacted by seasonal weather conditions, with periods of heavy rainfall affecting ground conditions and progress.
From an engineering perspective, the project involves deep excavations, significant earthworks and drainage installation, all of which must be carefully coordinated to maintain quality, safety and programme timelines.
Our Solution
Aureos is delivering a fully integrated infrastructure solution, combining engineering expertise with efficient on-site coordination.
The project includes:
– Construction of a new single carriageway road connecting Thorpe Road to Station Road
– Delivery of large-scale earthworks, from excavation to formation and build-up
– Installation of drainage systems and a pump station to manage water across the site
– Deployment of Aureos plant and self-delivery capabilities, ensuring control over key activities
Through close collaboration between site teams, engineers and planners, the project continues to progress despite challenging ground and environmental conditions.
Sustainability
Sustainability and environmental stewardship are central to the project’s design and delivery.
Key initiatives include:
– Construction of three on-site ponds, including a permanent water body to create new wildlife habitat
– Installation of a wildlife crossing, enabling safe movement of animals across the road corridor
