Project Overview
Aureos delivered the construction and testing elements of the ECML Tunnels Mobile Reception project on behalf of LNER and Network Rail. The scheme formed part of a wider Department for Transport (DfT) initiative to improve mobile connectivity and onboard passenger experience across the UK rail network. The project focused on providing reliable mobile coverage within the Gasworks Tunnel and Copenhagen Tunnel on the approach to King’s Cross Station in London.

The Challenge
Network Rail were contracted by LNER to deliver the design and install of a new communication system around Kings Cross Station, to ensure that the rail franchise can meet the DtF obligation in delivering improved mobile and on-board WIFI signal. With King’s Cross Station being one of the busiest stations, providing continuous mobile coverage within operational rail tunnels comes with its challenges.
Our Solution
Aureos delivered the construction and testing of the project, including 4 panel antennas, 4 power cubicles, a 1,500m of RF cabling, 5 No. 432F ribbon fibre joint boxes and all associated civils foundation and hardstanding. A central communications hub was installed at the Hornsey Street access point, linking the tunnel infrastructure to BT's telecommunications network and enabling seamless mobile connectivity for passengers.
Risk Management and Safety
Working within the approaches to King’s Cross Station required careful planning, coordination and safe delivery practises. Aureos managed multiple workstreams across telecommunication, power and civils disciplines while maintaining compliance with rail safety rules.
Sustainability and Long-Term Value
The completed system enables mobile phone coverage for East Coast Main Line passengers travelling through the Gasworks and Copenhagen tunnels, enhancing connectivity and improving the overall passenger experience.
