Project Overview
Aureos delivered the £10 million Market Gate Pedestrian Bridge scheme for Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, creating a safer and more accessible connection across the Sheffield to Leeds railway line while supporting the ongoing regeneration of Barnsley town centre.
The centrepiece of the project is a 61m steel cable-stayed bridge featuring a 45.5m main span supported by an A-frame pylon. The structure provides an attractive landmark for Barnsley while significantly improving pedestrian access across the railway corridor.

Alongside the bridge, Aureos delivered two dual-facing lifts, a roadway to a car park under the bridge, widened the road entrance, new kerbs, anti-slip tarmac on the stairs and walkway, guardrails, handrails, planters and seating areas all to create a safer and more accessible connection through the town centre.
The Challenge
Delivering a major bridge structure in the centre of Barnsley required extensive coordination with Network Rail, local businesses and the wider community to minimise disruption. Aureos undertook key activities during overnight possessions and carefully planned the installation of the bridge and pylons around suitable weather windows, enabling the safe execution of complex tandem crane lifts despite the scale of the structures.
Project Delivery
Aureos successfully delivered the scheme while meeting all of Network Rail's planned possession dates. Working closely with Network Rail, local businesses and the nearby Glass Works development, the team carefully coordinated rail access, traffic management and pedestrian routes to minimise disruption throughout construction. Through proactive programme management, regular stakeholder engagement and flexible planning, Aureos overcame project challenges while keeping the town centre operational and ensuring the successful delivery of all 15 planned rail possessions.
Sustainability and Long-term value
The completed bridge provides a safer and more accessible route across the railway, improving pedestrian connectivity and supporting the ongoing regeneration of Barnsley town centre. Value engineering was embedded throughout the project, with detailed ground investigations identifying coal seams beneath the site and enabling foundation locations to be optimised. This approach reduced construction risk, minimised waste and delivered a more efficient solution for the client, creating long-term value alongside lasting improvements to local infrastructure.
