Project Overview
Aureos delivered the refurbishment of SP Energy Networks' 132kV AC Line, a strategically important electricity transmission route spanning 97km between Dolgarrog in North Wales and Connah's Quay. Originally constructed in 1952, the line plays a vital role in transporting electricity across the region and required significant modernisation to improve reliability and long-term network performance.
The project involved upgrading key sections of the overhead line network, replacing ageing infrastructure and enhancing communications capabilities along the route. Delivered across diverse and often challenging environments, the refurbishment crossed major road networks, rail infrastructure, residential communities, environmentally sensitive areas and existing live power systems.

What We Delivered
The programme included the replacement of overhead conductors and earth wires across the route, alongside structural assessments and refurbishment of transmission towers where deterioration or damage had been identified. Aureos also installed new fibre optic communications infrastructure connecting key substations, helping to improve network monitoring and operational performance.
In total, more than 285km of new conductor and optical ground wire was installed, supported by foundation restoration works, temporary access infrastructure and specialist engineering solutions designed to safely deliver works across the transmission network.
Delivering Through Complexity
The route presented a variety of engineering and logistical challenges, requiring works to be carried out over Network Rail infrastructure, the A55, local roads, waterways and live electricity networks. To minimise disruption and maintain safety, the project team used innovative temporary protection systems and carefully planned outage programmes, allowing critical upgrades to be completed efficiently while maintaining network reliability.
The project was delivered during the Covid-19 pandemic, requiring teams to rapidly adapt working practices while maintaining progress, protecting employee wellbeing and continuing to meet programme requirements.
Environmental Management
Environmental stewardship was a key focus throughout delivery. The route passed through areas of ecological and archaeological importance, requiring extensive planning, specialist environmental supervision and close collaboration with regulators and stakeholders. Sensitive habitats, protected species and heritage assets were carefully managed to ensure works were delivered responsibly and sustainably.
Working closely with landowners, local authorities and communities, Aureos also secured the access arrangements needed to safely deliver the project while minimising disruption to residents, businesses and visitors along the route.
Outcome
The refurbishment has strengthened a critical part of the regional electricity network, improving the reliability and future resilience of the transmission system. Through innovative engineering, effective stakeholder engagement and a strong focus on safety and environmental management, Aureos successfully delivered a major infrastructure upgrade that will support secure electricity transmission for years to come.
