The Challenge
Working within a live railway environment presented significant space and engineering constraints. The construction of a 350m retaining wall alongside new sidings, overhead line equipment and existing infrastructure required innovative design solutions to maximise available space while maintaining safe rail operations.
Our Solution
Aureos developed a bespoke multidisciplinary solution that maximised the available space while maintaining compliance and operational safety. By incorporating structural foundations within the retaining wall design, the team created additional room for a compliant access walkway and supporting infrastructure.
The project delivered 800m of new railhead, extended existing sidings capacity, and included a range of supporting infrastructure upgrades, including a new car park, welfare facilities, maintenance hardstanding, drainage systems, lighting and CCTV. Together, these improvements have enhanced operational efficiency and increased train stabling capacity for Greater Anglia.
Risk Management and Safety
Working closely with Taylor Woodrow and key project stakeholders, Aureos maintained robust possession planning, logistics coordination and programme management throughout delivery. By sharing railway possessions wherever possible, the team minimised disruption to train services and reduced impacts on the wider rail network.
Sustainability and Long-term value
Sustainability was embedded throughout delivery. Aureos reused more than 80% of excavated material on site for backfilling and earthworks, significantly reducing waste and the need for imported aggregates. Innovative TroTred units were also used to combine cable routes and access walkways within a constrained footprint, reducing materials and improving installation efficiency.
The completed scheme has provided Greater Anglia with increased train stabling capacity, improved operational efficiency and modernised infrastructure that will support the continued growth of rail services across the East of England for years to come.
