Aureos is delivering the regeneration of Castlegate, the historic heart of Sheffield where the Rivers Sheaf and Don meet and Sheffield Castle once stood. The project is transforming this important city-centre site into a new public destination, creating Sheffield's newest public park while bringing the River Sheaf back into public view for the first time since 1912.

The scheme will open up and naturalise sections of the river, create high-quality public spaces, improve pedestrian connections and celebrate nationally significant archaeological remains uncovered during construction. Aureos is delivering the enabling works, earthworks, highways infrastructure, drainage, utilities, landscaping, ecological enhancements, pedestrian bridges, public art and public realm improvements that are making this transformation possible.
Bringing the River Sheaf Back to Sheffield
A key part of the project is the de-culverting and naturalisation of the River Sheaf, which has been hidden beneath the city for more than a century. The works are reopening sections of the river and creating a new waterside environment with improved habitats, planting and public access.
Regenerating a Historic Site
Castlegate sits on the site of medieval Sheffield Castle, making heritage and archaeology a major part of the project. Working alongside archaeologists, the team has helped uncover significant remains including the castle gatehouse, drawbridge pier and sections of the original walls. These discoveries have helped shape the design of the new public spaces and were featured on the BBC's Digging for Britain.
Creating the Infrastructure for Growth
Alongside the heritage works, Aureos is delivering the infrastructure needed to support the area's long-term regeneration. This includes earthworks, highways, drainage, utilities and the installation of six large precast concrete culverts that will form part of future site connectivity.
A carefully planned construction sequence included the installation of a link passage between future development plots and the placement of six large precast concrete culverts using a 200ft crane. These structures will ultimately form an underpass connecting future development areas and supporting movement between different levels of the completed public realm.
Delivering Lasting Social Value
The wider scheme includes pedestrian bridges, landscaping, lighting, signage, public art, ecological enhancements and extensive public realm improvements. Together, these works will create a new destination that connects Sheffield's medieval past with its future, providing a welcoming green space for residents, visitors and businesses.
Given the cultural importance of Castlegate, community engagement has remained central throughout delivery. The team has worked with organisations including Friends of Sheffield Castle and the Sheffield & District African Caribbean Community Association to maintain strong community involvement in the project.
